Nintendo has just dropped a substantial new update for Mario Kart World, injecting a fan-favorite Battle Mode and rolling out significant rebalancing changes that are set to shake up the competitive meta. Headlining the patch is the highly anticipated addition of Bob-omb Blast, a chaotic arena experience, alongside crucial adjustments to key items like the Boomerang and Bullet Bill.
The return of Bob-omb Blast has been widely speculated after a premature screenshot leak, and now players can finally dive into the explosive action. This beloved Battle Mode, a staple in previous Mario Kart titles, tasks drivers with strategically lobbing exploding Bob-ombs at opponents to rack up points. Players can hold up to ten Bob-ombs at a time, with throw distance dictated by how long the L Button is held, ensuring plenty of high-octane, bomb-laden mayhem.
Beyond the new mode, the update introduces a raft of gameplay tweaks designed to refine the racing experience. The powerful Boomerang item has received a notable nerf, seeing its range reduced and the number of consecutive throws limited. This change aims to temper its dominance and encourage a wider variety of item strategies.
Conversely, the Bullet Bill has received a substantial buff, granting players increased lateral movement, making it easier to navigate shortcuts immediately after activation. Its speed has also been boosted on specific challenging courses, including Bowser's Castle, Starview Peak, and Rainbow Road, potentially shifting optimal lines and strategies on these tracks.
Further general adjustments include rebalanced probabilities for items obtained from item boxes during races, ensuring a more dynamic flow of power-ups. Invincibility time after spinning or crashing will now vary based on character and vehicle weight, with heavier racers enjoying a longer reprieve. Players will no longer be crushed by environmental hazards like Thwomps while in a spinning or crashing state, though they will still be vulnerable to lightning and Spiny Shells immediately afterward. Minor environmental interactions have also been refined, such as Bob-ombs and Bananas no longer bouncing indefinitely on Ivy Piranha Plant vines.
Quality-of-life improvements round out the patch, with single-player and 1p online/wireless play now featuring up to two warnings for incoming Red or Spiny Shells from behind. The roulette sequence for course selection in online and wireless play has also been shortened, speeding up matchmaking. Several bugs have also been squashed, including incorrect starting positions, issues with Kamek's magic summoning creatures, and environmental elements appearing improperly in Airship Fortress.
